Aptos Labs has introduced "Confidential APT," a privacy-focused token on its mainnet, aiming to balance user privacy with transparency for compliance. The launch follows a governance proposal that received near-unanimous support. Confidential APT employs zero-knowledge proofs to conceal token balances and transfer amounts while allowing transaction verification, addressing privacy concerns that have hindered blockchain adoption.
Sherry Xiao, a founding engineer at Aptos Labs, highlighted the token's potential to mitigate risks such as wallet profiling and targeted scams. Confidential APT, pegged 1:1 to Aptos (APT), can obscure sensitive financial information like salaries and business strategies, which are typically exposed on public blockchains. Despite its privacy features, the token includes a backdoor for compliance, allowing audit keys to be used for investigations following an on-chain governance vote.
While individual users are expected to adopt Confidential APT more rapidly, Xiao anticipates that enterprise integration will take longer due to compliance and tax reporting challenges. However, successful operation on the mainnet could accelerate enterprise adoption.
