Anthropic launched Claude 5.1 on Tuesday, cutting fees by 75% for the step of re-accessing processed information while upgrading the model’s programming and research capabilities. The company said the pricing change will significantly reduce overall operating costs as enterprise customers push for lower AI spending amid intensifying competition among U.S. model providers.
Dianne Penn, Anthropic’s head of product management, said the re-access step can account for half or more of token consumption in complex long-running tasks and has been a frequent customer pain point. Anthropic also said enterprise customers will be allowed to retain data on their own cloud infrastructure while still undergoing the company’s security review, marking a major change in its previous data retention policy.
The advanced Claude 5.1 model, previously invite-only, will also be opened to a small group of preselected users on the same day.
