Anthropic and other major tech companies are consulting religious leaders, philosophers, and ethicists to shape the ethical judgment of their AI models. Anthropic has engaged scholars, clergy, and ethicists from more than 15 religious and cross-cultural groups on topics including personhood, moral judgment, and children's use of chatbots. Representatives from Meta, Google, and Amazon have also engaged with the Vatican.
Anthropic emphasized that the initiative is not about making Claude follow any single religion's worldview, but rather about understanding religious, secular, and political perspectives equally deeply. However, interviewed scholars warned that reducing religion to extractable moral rules may overlook disagreements among traditions and their cultural contexts, potentially amplifying the influence of particular traditions.
