Haseeb Qureshi, a partner at Dragonfly, has clarified the implications of a recently patched vulnerability in Zcash's Orchard privacy pool. He stated that if the vulnerability had been exploited, the primary impact would be on holders within the privacy pool, not on those holding transparent ZEC on exchanges. This is due to the need for attackers to unshield counterfeit Shielded ZEC before selling it, which would first affect the privacy pool.
Qureshi emphasized that Zcash's transparent supply is verifiable, ensuring that any over-minting would manifest as a depletion of assets in the privacy pool rather than affecting the transparent market. He noted that the Zcash team plans to introduce a new Turnstile mechanism and privacy pool in future upgrades to address these concerns. Despite market panic, the privacy pool's share of the total supply has only decreased slightly, indicating limited immediate impact. Qureshi also highlighted the importance of formal verification in enhancing cryptographic protocol security.
