Yuga Labs, the creator of the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), has settled a trademark dispute with artist Ryder Ripps and his partner Jeremy Cahen. The settlement resolves all claims in the case, though specific terms remain undisclosed. Ripps is now prohibited from using Yuga Labs' brand visuals and trademarks. The dispute began in 2022 when Yuga Labs sued Ripps and Cahen for creating a satirical project using identical images from the BAYC NFT series. Ripps claimed his project was protected as "expressive appropriation art," but a federal court ruled it could cause consumer confusion and infringe on Yuga's trademarks. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals later upheld that NFTs are protected under trademark law, though it overturned a $9 million penalty against Ripps.
