X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, has launched Smart Cashtags, a new feature designed to improve the way users reference financial assets, including cryptocurrencies and stocks. Announced by Nikita Bier, X's Head of Product, the feature aims to reduce ambiguity in financial discussions by allowing users to specify exact assets or smart contracts when using cashtags. This update addresses confusion caused by similar ticker symbols and enhances clarity in online financial conversations. Smart Cashtags also transform user interaction with market data by providing an in-app view with live pricing, performance charts, and essential market metrics. The feature supports a range of financial instruments, including cryptocurrencies, stocks, and ETFs, with mockups showcasing assets like Berkshire Hathaway Class B shares and Solana-based tokens. Currently in testing, Smart Cashtags are set for a public release in February 2026, aligning with Musk's vision of integrating financial tools into digital platforms.
