Wikipedia has experienced an 8% year-over-year decrease in human pageviews, as reported by The Shib Daily. This decline is largely attributed to the rise of generative AI tools and social media platforms, which are changing how users access information. Marshall Miller, Vice President of Product at the Wikimedia Foundation, highlighted that search engines are increasingly providing direct answers using Wikipedia content, which reduces direct traffic to the site. Additionally, the platform faces challenges from automated systems and bots that strain its infrastructure. Miller pointed out that this trend is not isolated to Wikipedia, as other similar platforms are also experiencing shifts in user engagement due to these technological advancements.
