Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin unveiled EIP-8288, a proposal introducing a recursive STARK mempool mechanism to address rising verification costs from quantum-resistant signatures and privacy technologies. The system separates signature and proof verification from on-chain execution by having mempool nodes aggregate cryptographic objects into a single unified proof before mainnet submission, reducing gas costs that currently range from 100,000 to over 1 million per transaction.
The proposal functions as a specialized compute-scaling solution that distributes verification work across network nodes for parallel processing. Buterin stated this could enable Layer 2 proof submission intervals to shrink from several minutes to under one minute while expanding support for diverse computing architectures like RISC-V. The mechanism remains in the proposal and simulation testing phase as Ethereum evolves toward modular computation.
