Vitalik Buterin's unexpected donation of Shiba Inu (SHIB) tokens has resulted in one of the largest AI policy funds globally, valued at $1 billion. In 2021, Buterin received a substantial amount of SHIB tokens from the creators of Shiba Inu, which he liquidated partially, donating $50 million to GiveWell. The remaining tokens were split between CryptoRelief and the Future of Life Institute (FLI), with FLI managing to liquidate approximately $500 million. FLI, initially focused on existential risks from AI, biotech, and nuclear weapons, has since shifted its strategy towards cultural and political action, a move Buterin finds concerning. He expressed discomfort with FLI's new approach, which he believes could lead to restrictive AI policies and concentration of power. Despite his concerns, Buterin acknowledged some positive initiatives by FLI, such as a "pro-human AI declaration." FLI has not yet commented on Buterin's public statements.
