Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin has called for a shift in focus for Ethereum's Layer 2 (L2) solutions, suggesting they should move beyond their traditional role of scaling. In a social media post, Buterin highlighted that Ethereum's Layer 1 (L1) is already advancing in scalability, with reduced fees and a significant increase in gas limits expected by 2026. He urged L2s to explore additional functionalities such as privacy enhancements, application-specific efficiencies, and non-financial use cases. Buterin also proposed the implementation of native rollup precompiles to improve interoperability and security between L2 and Ethereum. He emphasized the need for developers to innovate beyond merely scaling L1, suggesting that L2s should aim to meet at least phase 1 standards while exploring new features.
