Vitalik Buterin has implemented a "paranoid mode" wrapper for his AI agent tool that integrates zkAPI, Tor, random cover traffic, and local LLM prompt rewriting to enhance user privacy. Each conversation operates on an independent Tor circuit with payment identities hidden via zkAPI, while a local model handles prompt rewriting and the runtime environment forces network access through Tor using a bwrap sandbox and torsocks.
Buterin confirmed the solution is currently usable but noted that latency remains high due to Tor circuit creation and new conversation setup. He acknowledged that existing cover traffic protection is limited against coordinated active attacks between model providers and Tor entry nodes, suggesting a dedicated mixnet may be required in the future. Lower-cost zkAPI top-ups and withdrawal gas fees are expected to go live on mainnet soon.
