Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin announced a shift away from the rollup-centric roadmap, citing slow progress in Layer 2 (L2) advancements and significant Layer 1 (L1) scalability improvements. Buterin noted that the original vision of L2 as a 'branded sharding' solution is no longer feasible, partly due to regulatory constraints and L1's direct scalability enhancements, including lower fees and a projected increase in gas limits by 2026. Buterin suggests viewing L2 as a spectrum, allowing users to choose varying degrees of connectivity based on their needs. He encourages L2 solutions to explore unique value propositions beyond scalability, such as privacy, non-EVM virtual machines, extreme scalability, ultra-low latency, and built-in oracles. He also advocates for native rollup precompiled contracts and the use of built-in ZK-EVM to achieve EVM verification without security councils, enhancing interoperability and user security transparency.
