Vitalik Buterin has proposed the use of zero-knowledge (zk) anonymous voting mechanisms to safeguard decision makers from violent threats. In light of a recent arson attack on a judge's home, Buterin emphasized the need for governance actions to be conducted through secret voting to shield individuals from external pressures and violence. He highlighted that decision-makers, such as judges, should be able to act based on facts and conscience without fear of retaliation. Buterin acknowledged that while these ideas might seem radical, the increasing availability of physical retaliation, including threats from hostile foreign powers, makes such protective measures more relevant. He believes that integrating zero-knowledge proof technology into social governance could become a mainstream consideration in the 2020s.
