Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin emphasized the need for innovation beyond Ethereum's Layer 1 (L1) at the ETH Hong Kong Community Hub event. He outlined Ethereum's ambitious goal to improve L1 computational scaling by 1000-fold and stressed that Layer 2 (L2) solutions should not merely replicate L1 but offer unique capabilities such as privacy, low latency, and high throughput. Buterin also highlighted the importance of quantum resistance, proposing a shift from elliptic curve signatures to hash-based or lattice-based signatures, with deployment expected in 3-5 years. Buterin warned of potential AI threats, predicting that AI could discover all Denial of Service (DoS) vulnerabilities in Ethereum clients within 2-3 years, similar to attacks experienced in 2016. He urged the Ethereum Foundation to prioritize security enhancements to preempt such threats. Additionally, Buterin encouraged the Chinese crypto community to leverage new technologies like zero-knowledge proofs and AI to drive innovation, suggesting that future developments may not solely rely on Ethereum technology.
