Visa and Artemis have released a report titled “Agentic Payments from the Ground Up,” highlighting the transition of AI agent payments from theoretical concepts to practical applications. The report categorizes these payments into macro-commerce, involving tasks like bookings and subscriptions, and micro-commerce, which includes high-frequency, small-value transactions typically under $1.
The report examines two machine-native payment protocols: x402, which has processed $150 million in transactions since May 2025, and MPP, developed by Stripe and Tempo, which has settled $25,000 since March 2026. Both protocols handle transactions averaging just a few cents, making stablecoins more suitable for micro-commerce due to lower transaction fees compared to traditional credit cards. The report suggests a future convergence of traditional and stablecoin payment methods, while noting the challenge of liability attribution in AI agent payments.
