The Verus-Ethereum cross-chain bridge suffered a security breach resulting in losses exceeding $11 million, marking the eighth cross-chain bridge attack in 2026. Total losses from such incidents this year have reached nearly $329 million. Blockchain security firm Blockaid identified similarities between this vulnerability and the 2022 Wormhole and Nomad bridge attacks, noting that the issue stemmed from improper verification of source chain transaction parameters against Ethereum-side payment data. The vulnerability could be fixed with approximately 10 lines of code. Following the attack, some Verus network block-producing nodes went offline, temporarily halting block production.
