VersaBank, a Canadian chartered bank, has enhanced its tokenized deposit platform by adding foreign exchange functionality. This new feature allows users to convert USD to CAD in real-time using Real Bank Tokenized Deposits (RBTDs) on a blockchain-based system. The integration aims to streamline cross-border transactions by minimizing reliance on traditional foreign exchange methods. RBTDs are tokenized versions of bank deposits, backed 1:1 by customer deposits and transferable on blockchain infrastructure. Unlike stablecoins from non-bank entities, RBTDs operate within the banking system, offering a secure and regulated alternative. This development marks a significant step in the commercialization of VersaBank's tokenized deposit system, which has been in pilot since last year.
