Vanguard has officially surpassed BlackRock to become the largest provider of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States, holding $4.39 trillion in assets compared to BlackRock's $4.36 trillion. This marks the end of BlackRock's 23-year dominance in the US ETF market, a position it held since overtaking State Street in 2003.
Despite this shift in the US market, BlackRock remains the leader in global ETF assets under management (AUM) and total global AUM. Vanguard, however, continues to dominate the US market in both ETFs and mutual funds, with its VOO ETF leading in the single ETF category. Vanguard's significant inflows, approximately 50% more than its competitors, suggest its leadership position is likely to remain unchallenged for the foreseeable future.
