The U.S. Department of the Treasury has imposed sanctions on two UK-based digital asset exchanges, Zedcex Exchange and Zedxion Exchange, for their connections to Iranian businessman Babak Morteza Zanjani. This action marks the first time the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has targeted digital asset exchanges for involvement in Iran's financial sectors. Since its inception in August 2022, Zedcex has processed transactions exceeding $94 billion, with multiple addresses linked to the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
In addition to the exchanges, OFAC has sanctioned several Iranian officials, including Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni Kalagari, citing their roles in violent crackdowns within Iran. These measures underscore the U.S. government's ongoing efforts to curb Iran's financial activities through digital currencies.
