The US Treasury Department has sanctioned eight Canadian money services businesses for facilitating cryptocurrency transactions with Iranian entities under sanctions. The firms allegedly converted Iranian rial and other currencies into digital assets, enabling transactions with sanctioned Iranian exchanges and addresses linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Canada must not serve as a safe haven for illicit financial facilitators supporting the Iranian regime's sanctions evasion. The action was coordinated with Canada's financial intelligence unit, FINTRAC. Separately, the US "Rewards for Justice" program announced it will offer up to $20 million and possible relocation for information on Iran's nuclear program.
