US prosecutors have filed an appeal against the sentences of HashFlare co-founders Sergei Potapenko and Ivan Turõgin, arguing for 10-year prison terms. The duo was sentenced by Seattle Federal Court Judge Robert Lasnik to full prison terms, fined $25,000, and ordered to complete 360 hours of community service in Estonia. HashFlare, a crypto mining service, was revealed to be a $577 million Ponzi scheme. Potapenko and Turõgin were arrested in Estonia in October 2022, extradited to the US in May 2024, and pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
