US Energy Secretary Chris Wright has called on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to expedite grid access for large electricity consumers, including AI data centers and Bitcoin mining operations. In a letter released Thursday, Wright urged FERC to establish new rules for faster direct connections to the high-voltage transmission system, which supports higher power demands than local lines. This move aims to accommodate the rapid growth in electricity demand driven by large industrial loads. Bitcoin mining companies and AI centers stand to benefit from these proposed changes. CleanSpark CEO S. Matthew Schultz highlighted the potential for expedited connections under the new rules, which could see reviews completed in 60 days if applicants agree to cover necessary network upgrades. Wright has requested a response from FERC by April 30, 2026, as the competition for affordable, sustainable energy intensifies among these sectors.
