U.S. law enforcement has obtained private keys for 120,000 Bitcoin, valued at approximately $15 billion, due to a flaw in the key generation process. The private keys, linked to addresses affected by a defective pseudo-random number generator (PRNG), were not acquired through hacking but by identifying a randomness defect. Over 220,000 addresses are impacted, with a complete list now public. The PRNG's use of fixed offsets and patterns increased predictability, compromising security. Despite the disclosure, transactions to these vulnerable addresses continue, indicating ongoing risk.
