The UK is set to issue its first on-chain government bond, known as a digital gilt (DIGIT), by 2027, partnering with HSBC and the London Stock Exchange Group. This initiative aims to facilitate instant settlement and cross-platform collateral transfers, potentially unlocking significant liquidity in the market. Currently, UK gilts see daily trading volumes exceeding £45 billion. However, the project faces hurdles due to the absence of compliant GBP stablecoins necessary for on-chain cash settlements. The largest GBP stablecoin, TGBP, has a market cap of only $34.2 million. Additionally, the UK's crypto regulatory framework is not expected to be in place until October 2027. Analysts suggest that once regulatory and stablecoin infrastructure is established, on-chain government bonds could serve as high-quality collateral in the tokenized asset market.
