Starting April 6, UK investors will be prohibited from adding cryptocurrency exchange-traded notes (ETNs) to their Stocks and Shares ISA accounts, according to a new directive from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC). The tax authority has reclassified crypto ETNs as eligible only for the Innovative Finance ISA, a move that reflects the evolving regulatory stance on digital assets.
Investors currently holding crypto ETNs in their ISA accounts are not required to divest. However, no major platforms have announced plans to offer these products under the new classification. HMRC emphasized that it will continue to monitor the crypto market's development and may consider future policy adjustments.
