A UK resident, Ping Fai Yuen, has accused his estranged wife, Fun Yung Li, of stealing $172 million in Bitcoin by secretly recording him and accessing his hardware wallet's seed phrase. Court documents reveal that over 2,323 Bitcoin were transferred from Ping's Trezor wallet on August 2, 2023, and dispersed across 71 addresses. The case has sparked a legal battle over ownership and asset recovery through the High Court. Ping claims that audio recordings, installed after a warning from his daughter, capture discussions between Fun and her sister about obtaining the seed phrase. The recordings allegedly include phrases like "The Bitcoin has transferred to me" and "take all of it." Following the discovery, Ping confronted Fun, leading to his arrest for assault, while authorities seized ten crypto cold wallets linked to him. A court hearing in March highlighted a "very high probability of success" for Ping's claim, with an injunction pending to freeze Fun's crypto assets and recover the funds.
