Uganda has embarked on a $5.5 billion tokenized economy initiative in collaboration with Global Settlement Network and Diacente Group. This ambitious project integrates a national Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) with real-world infrastructure, aiming to boost economic growth. The initiative digitizes assets within Diacente Group's GISEZ, including agro-processing hubs, mining operations, and solar plants, creating a comprehensive asset-backed digital economy.
The CBDC, launched on GSN's permissioned blockchain, facilitates secure digital transactions for over 40 million Ugandans via smartphones and USSD. This project is aligned with national and regional development goals, with expectations to create over one million jobs and generate up to $10 billion in annual exports.
