At the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference, Turing Award winner Yoshua Bengio warned that current safety measures are failing to keep pace with the rapid advancements in AI capabilities. Speaking via remote link, Bengio highlighted that AI has both lowered the threshold for malicious activities and increased the potential harm. Bengio, known for his foresight in AI, is leading the LawZero project, which aims to develop systems capable of identifying and preventing harmful AI behaviors such as deception and self-preservation. An international AI safety report led by Bengio concludes that existing safety protocols are inadequate against the accelerating progress of AI.
