Defense attorneys for Tornado Cash co-founder Roman Storm are contemplating a mistrial application due to questions surrounding the prosecution's evidence. A key prosecution witness, Hanfeng Ling, alleged that funds he lost in a 2021 scam were laundered through Tornado Cash. However, defense lawyers highlighted the absence of on-chain evidence supporting this claim. Ethereum security expert Taylor Monahan supported the defense's position, stating on social media that the fraudulent funds did not pass through Tornado Cash, citing technical reasons for the confusion in fund tracking. Roman Storm, facing charges of conspiracy to launder money and violate sanctions, has pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he could face up to 45 years in prison. The trial is ongoing in Manhattan Federal Court.
