Tom Lehman, co-founder of the Layer2 network Facet, has proposed the integration of EIP-8182 into Ethereum's upcoming Hegota upgrade, scheduled for late 2026. This proposal aims to introduce protocol-level "Shielded Pools" to facilitate private transfers of ETH and ERC-20 tokens. The system would employ a UTXO-based architecture, eliminating the need for admin keys, proxy contracts, or pause mechanisms, and would utilize Groth16 zero-knowledge proofs for transaction verification.
Lehman emphasized that a unified protocol-level shielded pool could resolve the fragmentation of anonymity sets currently seen in existing privacy protocols. This would enable all wallets and applications to share a common privacy infrastructure, enhancing user privacy across the Ethereum network.
