Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission has proposed allowing intermediaries to offer qualified overseas crypto derivatives to retail investors. Eligible products must closely match crypto derivatives traded domestically in underlying assets, maturity, leverage and settlement method, and must trade on exchanges that use central counterparty clearing and are overseen by member regulators of specified international bodies or exchange groups.
Products that do not meet those standards would remain limited to institutional investors. The proposal follows Thailand SEC’s March 5 move to formally classify cryptocurrencies and digital tokens as permitted underlying assets for derivatives, while discussions on contract specifications with the Thailand Futures Exchange are ongoing. Public consultation will run through Sept. 30.
