Tando, a Kenyan mobile payments app, has launched a service allowing Bitcoin to be sent to any Kenyan phone number, converting it directly into Kenyan shillings (KES) and depositing it into the recipient's mobile money account, such as M-PESA. This innovation leverages the Lightning Network to facilitate fast and low-cost transactions without requiring recipients to have a crypto wallet or understand Bitcoin technology. The service positions itself as a "payment disbursement service," bypassing the need for KYC verification and lowering entry barriers for users. Tando's integration with Kenya's extensive mobile money infrastructure, which reaches over 80% of adults, aims to make Bitcoin adoption seamless and practical in a market where direct Bitcoin usage has been limited. This approach differentiates Tando from competitors like Strike and Machankura by focusing on user experience and leveraging existing mobile money systems.
