A Symbiosis Bitcoin Bridge exploit allowed an attacker to mint about 46.1 billion unbacked syBTC after depositing only 330 satoshis of Bitcoin, worth roughly $0.25. The attacker executed 12 fake deposits across BNB Chain, Ethereum, and Rootstock in about four minutes.
Symbiosis said two software vulnerabilities were combined in the attack, including an error that misidentified the attacker as an authorized depositor and bridge administrator and a fee-setting flaw that inflated deposit amounts. Preliminary losses for liquidity providers and affected users are estimated at 9.97 BTC, or about $770,000.
The native Bitcoin Bridge remains deactivated while related software is rewritten and independently audited. Symbiosis plans to compensate losses using some Bitcoin protected during the attack and other arrangements.
