French Gendarmerie Tactical Units, in collaboration with the FBI, have arrested John Daghita, also known as "John" or "Lick," on the Caribbean island of Saint Martin. Daghita is suspected of stealing over $20 million in cryptocurrency from a U.S. government-controlled wallet. The arrest follows the disappearance of these assets in October 2024, which were initially seized during the investigation into the 2016 Bitfinex exchange hack. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the arrest and shared images of seized hardware wallets and cash. Blockchain analysis traced approximately $24.9 million of the stolen funds to addresses linked to Daghita, part of a network managing over $90 million in suspicious assets. The investigation was aided by blockchain researcher ZachXBT, who traced the transaction flows in January 2026. The suspect's father, Dean Daghita, is president of a company contracted by the U.S. Marshals Service to manage seized cryptocurrencies, raising questions about internal access permissions.
