Stripe's CEO Patrick Collison and co-founder John Collison have highlighted the need for blockchain infrastructure to scale significantly, potentially requiring support for up to one billion transactions per second (TPS) to accommodate AI agents as primary online transaction executors. In their annual letter, they noted that current blockchain capabilities are insufficient, citing a recent memecoin transaction surge that caused significant delays and fee increases. Currently, Internet Computer Protocol and Solana lead in transaction speeds, with capacities of 1,196 and 1,140 TPS, respectively, but still fall short of the anticipated demand.
The Collisons also discussed the evolution of AI agents, which are transitioning from basic tasks like filling out web forms to more complex functions such as anticipating user needs. They emphasized that AI agents are at a critical juncture, moving from hype to practical application, necessitating robust blockchain support to handle the expected transaction volume.
