StarkWare has unveiled a zero-knowledge (ZK) verification system for the Bitcoin blockchain that can operate on mobile devices. This innovative solution compresses the Bitcoin block headers from the genesis block to the present into a 1 MB proof, enabling transaction verification in under 100 milliseconds. This development allows users to verify Bitcoin payments without the need for a full Bitcoin node, which can be costly and complex to set up. The lightweight client is based on the Simplified Payment Verification (SPV) concept from Satoshi Nakamoto's white paper, facilitating payment verification without downloading the entire ledger. This advancement is significant as it maintains Bitcoin's decentralization by reducing the need for expensive hardware, which could otherwise centralize the network under large service providers. StarkWare's solution addresses concerns about node storage requirements and ledger size, which have been contentious issues within the Bitcoin community.
