Stablecoins have overtaken Bitcoin as the most purchased cryptocurrency in Mexico, according to a report by Bitso. In 2025, stablecoins accounted for 36% of crypto purchases in the country, surpassing Bitcoin, which, despite falling behind in purchase preference, still holds a dominant 52% share in investment portfolios. Regionally in Latin America, dollar-pegged assets make up 40% of purchases, while Bitcoin accounts for 18%, highlighting the growing use of stablecoins for payments, savings, and cross-border transfers. Additionally, the Mexican Senate proposed a regulatory initiative in May requiring stablecoins pegged to the peso to have 100% liquid reserve backing.
