The South Korean National Tax Service (NTS) is set to appoint a professional escrow company by mid-year to manage seized virtual assets. This decision follows a security breach on February 26th, where mnemonic phrases were leaked, resulting in the theft of seized assets. The NTS aims to enhance security by transitioning from self-management to professional escrow services, selecting firms based on security standards, company size, and insurance under the Virtual Asset User Protection Act.
A "Virtual Asset Management System Upgrade Working Group" was established on March 11th to oversee this transition. The group will also refine procedures for the seizure, custody, and sale of virtual assets, alongside expanding professional training. Additionally, the NTS plans to create a "Digital Asset Management Section" to streamline the management and taxation of virtual assets, aligning with practices in developed countries.
