Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell Music have sued Anthropic in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, accusing the AI company of illegally downloading, scraping, and distributing copyrighted works to train its Claude models. The complaint seeks damages tied to tens of thousands of works, with plaintiffs asking for up to $150,000 per work and up to $25,000 for each alleged removal of copyright management information. The lawsuit also names Anthropic co-founders Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann as individual defendants. The complaint alleges Mann used BitTorrent to download more than 5 million pirated books, that employees obtained at least 2 million books from Pirate Library Mirror, and that Anthropic scraped lyrics from MusixMatch and LyricFind. If the court awards maximum damages, the total could reach billions of dollars. Anthropic is already facing multiple music copyright lawsuits and recently reached a $1.5 billion settlement with the publishing industry in a separate case.
