Solana is set to enhance its blockchain performance with the Agave v4.2 upgrade, aiming to reduce slot times from 400 milliseconds to 200 milliseconds. This upgrade, led by Anza, the engineering firm behind the Agave validator client, promises a significant overhaul at the client level. Faster slot times mean quicker transaction processing and confirmation, potentially doubling the network's current speed.
Anza has already demonstrated infrastructure optimizations, reducing Turbine retransmit latency from 600ms to 0.8ms using XDP enhancements. The Agave client, a fork of Solana Labs software, is part of Solana's strategy for client diversity. Additionally, the Alpenglow consensus initiative seeks to achieve 150-millisecond finality and eliminate on-chain vote transactions, which could improve network efficiency and transparency by reducing inflated transaction counts.
