Solana has successfully reduced its target slot time from 400ms to 250ms while maintaining a stable and low skip rate. Network stall time from consecutive skipped slots decreased to approximately 1,200-1,400ms, and the probability of validators losing voting credits has improved under the new parameters. Additionally, the maximum continuous leader duration dropped significantly, with P99 latency falling from roughly 3 seconds to 2 seconds. Despite these gains, the shorter slot time has increased voting latency, particularly affecting nodes in Asia and South America. Average voting latency remains below two slots with no signs of consensus instability, but Solana developers advise caution regarding any further reduction to 200ms before the Alpenglow upgrade goes live.
