SoftBank is in talks to acquire a majority stake in 1X Technologies, an OpenAI-backed humanoid robotics startup, in a deal that would value the company at about $6 billion. The investment would support SoftBank’s push into robotics and provide 1X with additional capital to bring its flexible-bodied household robots into consumer homes for domestic tasks.
The 12-year-old startup sought to raise $1 billion at a $10 billion valuation last autumn but reportedly secured less than half that amount. Masayoshi Son has long invested in robot developers and has said that physical devices combined with artificial intelligence could produce the next trillion-dollar company. OpenAI also reportedly discussed acquiring 1X last year, but those talks later collapsed.
