Switzerland's financial market infrastructure provider SIX has received approval from the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) to integrate its digital central securities depository (CSD) into its existing SIX SIS AG division. This integration, previously operated by SIX Digital Exchange AG, allows SIX to offer cryptocurrency custody services through the merged CSD.
The move consolidates SIX's infrastructure for traditional and blockchain-based assets, providing a unified platform for end-to-end post-trade services across asset classes. Financial institutions can now manage cryptocurrency custody under FINMA's regulatory framework using the same security systems as traditional instruments. Rafael Moral Santiago, Head of Securities Services at SIX, emphasized the goal of offering a secure entry point into digital assets, aligning innovation with system stability. This initiative is part of SIX's strategy to establish a comprehensive post-trade solution across Europe by 2030.
