Shopify and Coinbase have announced a joint development of the Commerce Payments Protocol, a stablecoin payment infrastructure designed for the Base network. The protocol aims to streamline the process for Shopify Payments merchants to accept USDC and other stablecoins as payment methods. The new system enables customers to pay directly from supported wallets without needing ETH to cover gas fees. Merchants will have the flexibility to receive payments in either their local currency or USDC, bridging traditional commerce with crypto-native settlement options.
