The Shiba Inu development team has successfully restored Shibarium following a significant bridge exploit. Over a ten-day period, the team, with support from cybersecurity firm Hexens.io, recovered assets and implemented enhanced security measures. The exploit involved three fake checkpoints submitted to Shibarium’s Ethereum contracts, disrupting communication between Heimdall’s local and on-chain states. The attacker also staked 4.6 million BONE tokens to manipulate validator thresholds.
In response, the team introduced multi-signature wallets, key rotations, and a blacklist feature for staking operations. The 4.6 million BONE tokens were recovered through a targeted approach, and the checkpoint system was repaired in a three-stage process. Additionally, the team partnered with dRPC.org to consolidate RPC services and is updating documentation to improve node setup and validator instructions.
