The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has settled a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit with History Associates Inc., acting on behalf of Coinbase, for $150,000. The settlement, filed on July 22, resolves the case concerning the SEC's investigations into Ethereum and its transition to a proof-of-stake system. As part of the agreement, the SEC will provide the remaining documents and cover the plaintiff's legal fees.
The lawsuit, initiated in June 2024, sought records related to SEC investigations into Zachary Coburn and Enigma MPC, as well as communications involving former SEC Chair Gary Gensler about Ethereum's blockchain migration. The court had ordered the SEC to prioritize these documents, leading to the release of thousands of records.
