Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron are facing a class-action lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, accused of manipulating DRAM supply and prices. Filed by 14 consumers and three small businesses, the lawsuit alleges that the companies conspired to inflate memory prices by approximately 700% since 2022, using the transition to High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) as a pretext to reduce DDR3 and DDR4 supply. The plaintiffs argue that this manipulation disregarded economic logic and cite Apple's increased prices for iPads and Macs as evidence of the impact on downstream products. If the lawsuit succeeds, the companies could face treble damages, potentially affecting all DRAM purchasers. This legal action follows previous fines for price-fixing against Samsung and SK Hynix in the early 2000s. Analysts from Jefferies forecast continued price increases, with a significant decline not expected until 2028.
