Samsung Electronics has successfully avoided a potential strike in its semiconductor division by agreeing to a significant bonus payout for its workers. The company reached a last-minute deal with the National Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU), preventing an 18-day work stoppage that could have resulted in $11.7 billion in lost production. Under the agreement, Samsung will allocate 13% of its operating profits as bonuses for employees in its Device Solutions division, amounting to approximately $340,000 per worker. The agreement comes amid a surge in demand for AI chips, with Samsung's workers seeking compensation that reflects the company's increased earnings from AI-driven orders. The union had pushed for a profit-sharing model similar to that of rival SK hynix, where bonuses reportedly reached $900,000 per worker. The compromise reached by Samsung acknowledges the workers' claims to a share in the AI boom's profits, setting a precedent for future negotiations in the semiconductor industry.
