Keonne Rodriguez, co-founder of Samourai Wallet, has been sentenced to five years in prison and fined $250,000 for illegal money transmission activities. Rodriguez, who also faces $2 million in legal fees, declared himself "financially bankrupt" on social media. The U.S. Department of Justice and his legal team are pursuing payment. Rodriguez and co-founder William Lonergan Hill were charged in April 2024 with conspiracy to launder money and operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. They initially pleaded not guilty but changed their plea to guilty in July 2025.
