The Republic of Buryatia and Zabaykalsky Krai in Russia will lift temporary cryptocurrency mining restrictions on March 15, according to market sources. These Siberian regions had imposed seasonal restrictions last year to manage energy shortages during autumn and winter. However, a five-year total ban on mining in these areas is expected to commence in 2026.
Currently, Russia has banned cryptocurrency mining in ten regions, including Irkutsk Oblast and several Caucasian republics, with these prohibitions in place until March 2031. The regulatory changes have complicated investment planning for Russian mining companies. BitRiver, Russia's largest mining firm, is undergoing bankruptcy proceedings, and its founder, Igor Runets, was detained in January for alleged tax evasion. Despite completing a 100-megawatt mining data center in Buryatia, the facility has not been operational.
